History
The East Midwood Hebrew Day School was founded in 1956 as the East Midwood Academy. In 1969, to honor the East Midwood Jewish Center’s spiritual leader, the name became the Rabbi Harry Halpern Day School. In 2004, the school became the East Midwood Hebrew Day School, Rabbi Harry Halpern Educational Center.
The East Midwood Hebrew Day School was fortunate to have the involvement of two outstanding educators whose values for secular and Judaic studies continue to provide the vision that drives the school today.
Henry R. Goldberg z”l, guided the school’s educational mission from 1956 until the early 1960’s. Building on the strong foundations of his predecessor, Dr. Aryeh Rohn z”l, continued to lead the school for thirty three years. Although originally part of the East Midwood Jewish Center, the school is now an independent Solomon Schechter school run by a Board of Trustees.
Since the first graduating class in 1962, there has been a steady stream of graduates who have been accepted into the most prestigious high schools, colleges, and universities. A great percentage of our graduates have gone on to attain leading positions in the corporate, professional, and educational world. From coast to coast and in Israel, our alumni are active members of their synagogues and communities.
It is thanks to the original leaders, the principals who succeeded them, and a dedicated staff that the school continues to flourish as an outstanding educational institution. One where the integration of general and Judaic studies continues to develop proud, educated, and active members of the American Jewish community.
“AND ALL THY CHILDREN SHALL BE TAUGHT OF THE LORD.”
