Special Subjects

ART
In addition to the art that takes place on a daily basis in the classroom, all students attend an art class every week. All art personnel are experienced in the field of education as well as their chosen field. The art room is continually filled with natural light that sets the proper environment for the various elements of art that are developed within its confines.

All art classes are grade appropriate with an emphasis placed on developing the strengths of the individual student. Children are instructed to use various media, such as pencil, markers, pastels, acrylics, oil, water color and clay. The art room boasts a professional kiln for the firing of clay. In celebrating the various holidays, the art class is used to enhance the study of each occasion. Students can be seen developing original work based on the instruction in such areas as Japanese marbleizing, perspective, pop-ups and printing.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
All students are required to participate in physical education classes.. Our program recognizes the wide range of abilities and interests of students and seeks to offer choice and flexibility to accommodate the differences in a child’s rate of growth. Softball, tennis, badminton, racing, and exercise are part of a curriculum that endeavors to condition and train both the body and mind.

MUSIC
Music reaches out beyond the classroom and envelopes stage productions, Passover Seders, and presentations for parents, grandparents and special guests. Music enhances and becomes a joyful and rewarding activity. Our music program fosters creativity, individuality, and teamwork. Through music, our students learn another way of appreciating and understading our cultural heritage as well as the culture of others.

COMPUTER
Computers are part of the daily routine at EMHDS. The entire school is equipped with Internet access, and SMARTBoards can be found in many of our classrooms. Our technology program is project-based and correlates to the General and Judaic Studies curricula.

In the lower grades, students become familiar with the Internet and keyboard, and are exposed to Microsoft Word, paint programs, and other age appropriate software. In the upper grades, students use applications in Microsoft Office and iLife to create digital movies and podcasts. Students in all grades are instructed in the safe and appropriate use of the Internet. All assignments and projects are posted on a blog for students and families to access. Regular updates about the technology program can be found on our Twitter page and our technology program Web site.
