East Midwood Hebrew Day School is an inclusive, traditional, Jewish elementary and middle school located in the East Midwood section of Brooklyn. We are a passionate team of educators whose mission is to create a better world by developing students to their full academic, spiritual, social and physical potential—guiding them with timeless Jewish values and traditions to promote their success in life.
Our secular education prepares our students with the full range of skills they will need to face the realities of today’s knowledge-based and digital world. Our Judaic Studies/Hebrew education immerses our students in our faith with the great universal truths of Judaism which include Kavod, Derech Eretz and the ruach of our diverse heritages. It builds a sense of self-worth linked to the ethical code of conduct which is central to Jewish teachings.
At East Midwood, our students’ educational experiences range between Moses and Macbeth, biology and the Bible. Our students learn that the bi-cultural education they receive reflects the deepest concerns of their teachers and parents, who are the most influential role models in their lives.
At East Midwood, we offer a full range of Hebrew language and Judaic Studies classes. Our students learn and celebrate the essence of each of the holy days. Each day begins with Tefilah. Our students learn Hebrew through an immersion approach, Ivrit B’Ivrit which begins with Tal Am, a unique curriculum of Hebrew Language Arts and Jewish studies geared to students in the lower school.
Students receive instruction in Chumash, Navi, Dinim, Halacha and Gemara. In Middle School, students advance their studies through Talmudic discussions. They are encouraged to engage in meaningful Chesed projects as part of their becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We embody a dedication to scholarship, where ancient texts provide a roadmap for modern times.
Our commitment to Chesed outreach programs, with full support of the State of Israel and the study of Jewish history are central to our mission. Our students develop a love of ‘Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael and Torat Yisrael’.
In nurturing a lifelong love of learning, we seek to develop the understanding that the discovery of personal meaning, identity and individual growth can emerge from the rigors of study.
Early Childhood Education - The journey begins in our Nursey and Pre-K classes, where they learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet. In Kindergarten children continue to grow as readers and writers. They are taught to be critical thinkers to help them make an easy transition to grade 1.
Elementary School (Grades 1 to 5) - In the elementary years, students have English subjects for a full morning or afternoon. Hebrew occupies the remainder of the day leaving time for music, art, science lab, computer and gym. Reading, writing, study and research skills are emphasized across disciplines.
Middle School (Grades 6 to 8) - In our Middle School our students engage in a rigorous core curriculum consisting of ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies and Hebrew. They are encouraged to engage in meaningful chesed projects as part of their becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Regents are offered in Earth Science and Math. The BJE High School Placement Exam (in Hebrew) and PSAT 8/9 in General Studies are offered. We participate in the NYS standardized testing program. Our students perform extremely well on these tests.
