Middle School (6-8)

Academic Programs

In our Middle School (grades 6 to 8) our students begin a departmentalized program of 8 forty-five minute periods. Students engage in a rigorous core curriculum consisting of Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Hebrew. Regents are offered in Biology, Earth Science, Math, and Hebrew.

Through the E2K program, sponsored by the Gruss Foundation, the school provides extensive problem solving and scientific discovery opportunities. This afterschool program serves the needs of our talented math and science students. Club hours (for grades 6, 7 & 8) enable students to select areas of specialization for 10-week residencies.

EMHDS participates in the NYS standardized testing program. Students in grades 4, 6, and 8 take both the ELA and NYS Math Test. Over the years, our students have performed extremely well on these tests. They have achieved admission to choice programs across the city.

Several trips are planned for each grade throughout the school year to support and enhance the curriculum.

Judaic Studies

Our middle School curriculum is departmentalized. Students strengthen their Hebrew language skills and further build upon their knowledge of Judaism. One highlight of Middle School – in addition, of course, to graduation -- is the trip that our Sixth Graders/Kitah Vav take to the TEVA Learning Center in Falls Village, Ct.

Each year, through the Tevah Program, our sixth graders spend 72 hours honing their environmental skills and learning how to be more kind to our planet, all within a Jewish ethical framework.

All the classes learn about Israel and Jewish public affairs throughout the school year. We study in depth about Israel’s history and its place in the world today. We emphasize the living bond between Israel and the diaspora by participating in special projects, donating money to worthy causes, and discussing related current events. On Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, we celebrate with a festival that includes singing songs, performing plays, dancing, and eating Israeli food.

Utilizing constructivist teaching methodologies, and teaching to the different learning styles of our students, our Judaic Studies teachers work to make an East Midwood Hebrew Day School education an outstanding and profoundly enriching experience.
