HEAD OF SCHOOL
Mrs. Shirley Weichselbaum, Head of School, East Midwood Hebrew Day School
It is with great pride and pleasure that I serve as Head of School of the East Midwood Hebrew Day School. My 30 years plus journey began in the 1980’s as a parent of two students who attended and graduated from this school. I strongly believed in volunteerism and so was very active in the PTA, helped in the office (in the days of filing and envelope stuffing) and helped our then librarian keep the library organized and ready for classes.
Having both a B.A. and M.A. in Elementary Education, Dr. Rohn z”l, the principal at that time, offered me a position I could not refuse, as first grade teacher and the rest is history. Over 27 years here at East Midwood Hebrew Day School, I’ve taught not only first grade, but second, fourth and fifth as well. I spent one year as staff and curriculum developer/coordinator and one year as Assistant Principal. During these last years I completed a second M.S. degree in school building and district leadership.
For me, East Midwood Hebrew Day School is home. I am proud of the foundation, nurturing environment and education our students receive here in both Judaic and Secular Studies. I look at my own children, now in their 30’s and established in their lives, careers and sense of Jewish culture, heritage and identity, and see how far their educational experience in this school has brought them.
Everything can be built to great heights once on a sturdy, solid foundation. This is what East Midwood Hebrew Day School is to me, a school to be proud of and a home.
